SMARTHAND
a non-profit association · open hardware

The governing body for open hardware

Make it yourself.
Free.

SmartHand designs open, printable, repairable versions of the everyday tools and machines you already buy — from a screwdriver to a washing machine. Free to make. Licensed to sell.

01The problem

Your tools aren't really yours. Batteries are glued in. Parts can't be replaced. Every brand locks you to its own battery. Left-handers get nothing. And when one cheap part fails, the whole thing goes in the bin. Good hardware has been turned into a subscription.

02The idea

One association that designs the open version of all of it — printable on any cheap FDM printer, built to be repaired forever, and owned outright. Anyone can make one at home for free. Companies that want to sell them get vetted and licensed. SmartHand becomes to open hardware what a world federation is to its sport.

03The model

Free for people

Print, build, modify and repair any design forever, at no cost — just keep the SmartHand name on it.

Licensed for companies

Selling requires approval. Only vetted makers carry the brand; commercial terms are negotiated per partner.

A non-profit that gets wealthy

Licensing funds the association, pays its people well, and keeps it independent — like FIFA, minus the football.

One battery, every tool

A single open, swappable SmartHand battery powers the whole range. No lock-in — the racket, reversed.

04The engineering ideology

Modular, repairable, printable, accessible, non-disposable — by rule, not by marketing. Parts snap apart into pieces you can reprint, reuse and share. Nothing is sealed, glued, or thrown away. These aren't guidelines; every SmartHand design must obey them.
